Sparkle and Shine

Today’s dishwasher detergents employee enzymes to clean your dishes. Here is the proper way to load and run your dishwasher so the enzymes clean your dishes until they shine.

Keep Your Dishes Dirty
When loading your dishwasher, your dishes should still be dirty. The enzymes in your dishwasher need organic matter to activate and start cleaning your dishes.

Scrape all the loose food off your plate, just don’t completely clean your plate before washing. This will leave enough matter for your enzymes to activate.

Proper Water Temperature
The enzymes in your dishwasher detergent activate at a temperature of 120 degrees.  If the water is too hot, the enzymes will not activate. If the water is too cold, the enzymes will not activate. The water needs to be 120 degrees coming from your hot water line. You can test the temperature with a thermometer: turn your water on at the sink, stick a thermometer in the water and read the temperature.

Today, a lot of hot water heaters in homes are far away from the dishwasher.  If a dishwasher only uses one or two gallons to wash the dishes, the hot water shuts off by the time it reaches the dishwasher and dishes are being washed in cold water.

To make sure the water temperature is hot when you start your dishwasher, turn your sink on and let the water run until it’s hot. Since sinks are usually next to dishwashers, start the dishwasher once the water from your kitchen sink faucet is hot.

Use Drying Agents
If your dishwasher is equipped to use a drying agent, such as Jet Dry, use it. Drying agents will help make your dishes sparkly clean. Dishes won’t have water stains, residue or any chalky substances and will be spotless every time.
